The Bates College men's ice hockey team competes in the Colonial Conference of the Northeast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA), a regional league of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).
The Bobcats have won four consecutive NECHA Colonial Conference regular season titles and have been crowned playoff champions in consecutive years running. In 2008, the team topped Daniel Webster College 2-1 in overtime to win the championship. In 2009, Bates shutout Keene State College 3-0 to secure their second consecutive and only hockey championships in Bates College history.
Competing as members of the Colonial North Division in 2008-2009 play, the team had a very successful season. The team was 12-1-0-0 in conference play and 16-3-0-1 overall.
This past season the Colonial North Conference featured opponents such as Keene State College, Springfield College, Daniel Webster College, and Lyndon State College.
The Colonial South Conference was comprised of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Connecticut College Club, US Coast Guard Academy, Rhode Island College, and Tufts University Club. We also played non-league games against the University of New England and the University of Maine-Orono Club.
Our current team represents a diverse range in talent and experience.
Our roster boasts players from California to Maine and players have played at varying levels including Midget AAA, Junior B, Prep School and Public Schools.
We are proud to be coached by former University of Maine Black Bears defenseman Tom Leblond. Coach Leblond resides locally in Lewiston and teaches history at neighboring Lewiston High School. This past season we welcomed aboard an assistant coach in the form of Brian Langlais, a former Northeastern University Club forward.
All of our home games and practices are held at Underhill Arena, located on our campus at Bates College. Completed in 1995, the rink remains in great shape and admission to all games is free to students and the general public.
In addition to playing hockey, all of the administrative duties are the responsibility of the hockey team. Obligations range from fundraising to various other team management tasks.
For the upcoming 2009-2010 hockey season, the team has already elected captains and team officials:
